What is the Nipple?
The nipple is the very central portion of the nipple-areola complex (NAC). It usually projects forward and is the part a baby takes in its mouth to breast feed, as breast milk is released through the nipple via tiny ducts.
Do Nipples change over time?
Yes, typically nipples may become (and can remain) bigger after a pregnancy/breast feeding. Nipples can also become inverted after a pregnancy, or with increasing breast size. However medical reasons for both enlarged and inverted nipples need to be ruled out, in particular breast cancer.
Can you correct Enlarged Nipples?
Yes, there are a number of ways. If too wide, then a pizza wedge of nipple can be removed. If too tall the top can be removed, but not advisable if you plan to breast feed in the future. If planning to breast feed, then a ring excision of the outer wall can be performed.
Can you correct Inverted Nipples?
Yes, including non-surgical methods, such as suction devices and even nipple piercing. Breast implants will often encourage an inverted nipple to come out. Surgical techniques vary, and overall are best left till after you have completed your family as the milk ducts can be affected reducing the ability to breast feed. The technique I find works best is the "trampoline" technique, but this does involve dividing the milk ducts.
Can surgery be done on Extra or Unusual Nipples?
Yes, extra nipples along the chest or abdomen in the "milk line" are fairly common and can be removed. Some patients have bifid or double nipples in their NAC and surgery will depend on the pattern but is usually possible.
